Bermuda – Getting Around

In Bermuda, traffic is the opposite side as ours in Canada.  Traffic drives on the left.  Be careful if you chose to rent a vehicle to keep to the left side.

Sidewalk traffic generally is the same as vehicle traffic. When in a country that drives on the left side, you should walk on the left hand side of the sidewalk as well.

Look LEFT first, then right when crossing the street.

Transit

The bus and ferry system is easy to use and get around.  The bus stops are coloured.  Pink stops are travelling towards Hamilton City and blue stops are travelling away from Hamilton City.  There are 11 bus routes that travel around the island with Hamilton as the connecting point.

Blue bus stop

You can pay by cash (the most expensive), Tokens (cheaper) or Tickets (cheapest).  Tickets, tokens and passes can be purchased at the Hamilton Ferry Terminal or the Visitor Information Centers in St. George’s or Dockyard.  All days passes are also available for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 7 day passes.

To see the listing of the routes to the popular destinations, check out: https://www.gov.bm/bus

When getting on the bus, say ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Good Afternoon’ to the bus driver and again say the same to everyone on the bus.  This is the courteous thing to do and you will be greeted back by most people.

Renting a vehicle

You can rent a scooter or can now rent an electric car as well.

Visitors are not allowed to rent a motorcycle higher than 50 cc. The fastest speed limit on the island is 35km/hr. Roads are windy and you do need to watch out for debris on the road.

Drivers need to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license.
